Visp - Traumatology

Treatment of musculoskeletal injuries (bones, tendons, ligaments and soft tissues) is provided by the Traumatology Department at the Visp site of the Upper Valais Hospital Centre as part of the orthopaedic/traumatology clinic.

Thanks to its very central location in Upper Valais, the hospital is the primary point of contact for many well-known holiday resorts and ski areas in the region. Not least because of the increasing number of sports accidents, we have acquired a high level of expertise in the treatment of accident injuries of all ages and musculoskeletal disorders. In addition to acute treatment in trauma surgery (especially fractures of the musculoskeletal system), we also perform numerous elective procedures for the consequences of accidental injuries.

Around 4000 traumatological patients are treated in the emergency department in Visp every year.

Department overview

  • Traumatology of the musculoskeletal system is subject to constant further development. Surgical techniques are becoming increasingly minimally invasive using special implants. More and more 3-dimensional imaging is being used. This is also done with modern equipment during the operation. New operations are monitored and supported by means of digital process monitoring (SPI).

  • Project FLS (fracture liaison service)
The Upper Valais Hospital Centre operates a certified fracture liaison service. This is an interdisciplinary/interprofessional process for the secondary prevention of fractures caused by osteoporosis.
Patients over the age of 50 are systematically assessed for osteoporosis in the event of fractures near the hip, fractures of the pelvis and fractures of the vertebral bodies and, if necessary, treatment is initiated.
This secondary prophylaxis is important in order to prevent any subsequent fractures caused by osteoporosis as far as possible.

Further information is available at szo.fls(at)

  • The Orthopaedics / Traumatology Clinic employs a total of 14 junior doctors. These rotate as orthopaedic or surgical specialists in all departments at both sites. In Brig, these are the Orthopaedics Department, the Spinal Surgery Department and the Hand Surgery Department.

Of course, we also offer residency positions for non-surgical specialisations (external year).

At the Visp site, in addition to a rotation in traumatology, a rotation in the emergency ward is also planned. A rotation in intensive care medicine can also be planned.

In addition, various specialisations can be completed in our clinic after specialist training.
