Paediatric emergencies at Sion Hospital
24-hour, 365-day paediatric emergency care for children from birth to 16 years of age.
Every year, more than 16,000 children are examined in the paediatric medical and surgical emergency department. The paediatric emergency department is located on two floors of Sion Hospital:
- Floor D: medical emergencies from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Floor B:
- life-threatening emergencies and paediatric traumatology
- paediatrics from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
We treat children who require acute mental and physical care.
Our emergency care includes:
- Triage of the degree of urgency, with pain management
- Assessment of vital functions and ensuring the urgent somatic or psychiatric stabilisation of patients.
- Carrying out the urgent investigations necessary for treatment and/or decisions on the patient's referral.
- After an initial assessment, arranging referral to a specialist centre according to the patient's care needs.
- Arranging for the patient to return home or be transferred to a care facility appropriate to their condition.

The paediatric admissions and emergency department has an 8-bed ward for short-term monitoring. The department is open from 7.30am to 11pm.
Children are admitted who:
- Require monitoring for a few hours (in cases of dehydration or respiratory problems, for example), or
- Are awaiting an examination (e.g. CT scan), outpatient hospital treatment, a specialist consultation or a place in the operating theatre.
- Post-operative monitoring
Children staying in this area may be accompanied by a family member.
