General Surgery and Visceral Surgery at Sion Hospital

General surgery is the medical speciality which deals with diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions. It can cover fields such as emergency surgery, traumatology, and the treatment of common conditions such as calculus of the urinary bladder, hernias or appendicitis, but also more specialised fields, such as visceral, vascular or thoracic surgery.

This speciality acts as a ‘turntable’ between numerous other surgical activities in the hospital, involving cooperation with other specialists such as cardiac surgeons, urologists or neurosurgeons, amongst others.

Most general surgeons are trained in one or more specialities, such as visceral, thoracic or vascular surgery. In addition, the surgical departments at Valais Hospital benefit from cooperation agreements with various Swiss university hospitals, including in particular the Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois (CHUV) and the Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève (HUG).

The general surgery departments are well-respected in Switzerland, and they also play an active role in training future doctors. Valais Hospital’s surgical specialists and several of its surgeons are involved in university teaching. In recent years, particular attention has been paid to technical developments and to the promotion of IT management tools.
