General and Visceral Surgery (CHVR) Valais Romand Hospital Centre

General surgery is the medical discipline responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of conditions. Its scope extends to areas such as emergency surgery, trauma, and the treatment of common conditions such as gallstones, hernias and appendicitis, as well as to much more specialised fields, notably visceral, vascular and thoracic surgery.

This discipline acts as a ‘hub’ for many other surgical activities within the hospital, liaising with other specialists such as cardiac surgeons, urologists and neurosurgeons, amongst others.
Most general surgeons have completed one or more subspecialist training programmes, such as in visceral surgery. The surgical departments at the Valais Hospital also benefit from collaboration agreements and partnerships with various Swiss university hospitals, notably the Vaud University Hospital (CHUV) and the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG).

Recognised throughout Switzerland, the general surgery departments are also very active in training future doctors. Surgical specialists and several surgeons at the Valais Hospital are involved in university-level teaching. In recent years, particular attention has been paid to technological development and the promotion of IT management tools.
