Information for patients and families Inpatient stay

The Cardiology Department at Valais Hospital treats over 1,000 inpatients each year. It performs nearly 3,000 cardiac ultrasounds annually and over 1,600 coronary angiograms and coronary angioplasties (stent placements) each year.

Our department has 24 inpatient beds located on the J floor. Within the department, a 12-bed mixed-use intermediate care unit (catering for cardiology and cardiac surgery patients) provides care that bridges the gap between conventional inpatient care and the intensive care unit. It allows for close supervision with continuous monitoring with the aim of improving or stabilising a patient’s clinical condition.

Investigations and treatments are provided for both patients admitted for scheduled investigations and those admitted as emergencies. Care is provided by junior cardiology doctors, in collaboration with senior residents, senior registrars and specialists from various disciplines. We primarily treat (non-exhaustive list) adults

• with angina pectoris or myocardial infarction.
• requiring investigations prior to cardiac surgery (coronary artery bypass grafting, heart valve surgery)
• patients with congenital malformations such as intracardiac shunts (e.g. percutaneous closure of a patent foramen ovale)
• patients with heart failure: comprehensive care including rehabilitation and outpatient follow-up. We work closely with the CHUV for patients awaiting a heart transplant or who have already undergone a transplant.

We collaborate closely with the Department of Internal Medicine, the Department of Cardiac Surgery, the A&E Department and the Intensive Care Unit.

Visiting

Visiting hours are from 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm and from 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm. Due to the constantly changing health situation, please check the latest visiting information here beforehand. Paid parking is available.
