Tropical Medicine and Travel Medicine

Tropical medicine and travel medicine aim to prevent and treat diseases connected to travelling, in particular infectious diseases.

This activity is integrated into the Infectious Diseases Department of the Central Institute of hospitals. As well as dealing with travel medicine, this department brings together all of the fields connected to infectious diseases: medical consultations in infectiology, microbiology, the prevention and control of infection (or hospital hygiene or hospital epidemiology), screening for HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases and combating contagious diseases.

Travellers who wish to update their vaccinations, in particular against yellow fever (recognised by the Federal Office for Public Health, ‘Office fédéral de la santé publique’), and to obtain specialist advice are seen by the department’s infectiologists, who are also available in case of problems involving suspected infections upon returning from a trip abroad.
