Obstetrics and Gynaecology Sion

Gynaecology is the medico-surgical speciality devoted to the physiology of and conditions affecting the female genital system. Obstetrics is a medico-surgical speciality connected to pregnancy and labour. The main practitioners of this speciality are midwives and doctors. Bringing these two specialities together allows for holistic care to be provided to women during their lives. The Valais Hospital Obstetrics and Gynaecology Departments are located in Sion for the Valais romand region and in Visp for the Haut-Valais region.

Concentrating these specialists in the two sites of Sion and Visp ensures a high level of competence. The Valais Hospital is home to one of the most important maternity wards in French-speaking Switzerland and more than 2,100 babies have been born at the Valais Hospital.

Visiting hours

During the covid period, with the restriction of visitors' access to the obstetric unit, the patients noted that they benefited from a more serene stay, that their rest and that of the baby was favoured and that the availability of the newborn for breastfeeding, care and the relationship with his parents was greatly facilitated. The professionals made the same observations.

In order to encourage the links between parents, brothers and sisters and the newborn baby, the spouse and siblings are welcome without restriction.

For other visitors, we recommend that they visit the family once they have returned home.
If this is not possible, they are allowed to come to the maternity ward from 1.30 pm to 4 pm.
